Welcome to Pack 230
Pack 230 is in Oceanside, NY. We are sponsored by the John A Kissel VFW Post 5199 in Oceanside. We have an active program of age-appropriate indoor and outdoor activities and meetings.

The pack generally meets on the 3rd Friday of each month unless it’s a holiday. We ususally meet at the Oceansdie School #2 on Terell. At each monthly meeting we recognize the work and achievement of our Cubs as they progress through the many achievement and elective requirements in the program. We are very proud of our active pariticpation in Community Service and Conservation Projects throughout the year!

Pack 230 is a family friendly cub pack. We encourage families to attend the pack meetings together and to participate in many of our activities as a family. Cub Scouting provides wonderful opportunities for cubs and their families to share experiences, work together, and have fun.

Please join us on a great adventure called "Scouting."
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR COMMITTEE CHAIR & CUBMASTER
Pack 230 gives Debbie C and Tony F a great BIG BULLY! for having the distinction and honor of being awarded the District Award of Merit.

Patrols reflect on Cub Scout adventures
The Scorpions and Lightening Bolt dens are working on the Communicator Activity Badge. As these scouts prepare for Boy Scouting, they take a moment to reflect on their cub scouting adventures

My favorite memory in scouting is the Cub/Parent weekend . It was the first time I slept in a tent.

I did Archery. We hunt for treasure which was so much fun. I also learned how to use a compass with my mom. I raced with other scout by stepping on a wooden platform that was attached to a rope. I learned that through team work you can win. I walked to the lake through the woods with other scouts. I learned how to make fire using stone. But the best part was sleeping in a tent and I really enjoyed it.

I spent a whole weekend with my friends and I had a lot of fun. I can not wait to go on it again.

My favorite memory from Cub Scouts was sleeping at the Atlantis Aquarium.  We slept right under the shark tank.  I saw mostly tiger sharks, nurse sharks and grouper.  It wasn't scary, it was really cool.  That is my favorite memory from Cub Scouts.

My favorite trip I went on with Pack 230 was. The USS Massachusetts Battleship. We were able to sleep on the ship, just like the men who served on it. I think that was pretty cool.

We got to watch this movie about a man that turns into a fish that wear eyeglasses in the water. Mom and dad said that movie has been around for a long time.

What was also cool was we got to walk around the outside and the inside of the ship. You can't believe how man rooms are on a ship. You could see the kitchen, the radio room. the hospital area on the ship and alot more rooms. And I got to see alot on war medals, that was cool.  They also had a building with an old type of ship. I was also able to get dog tags made for me and my parents.

So,those are some of the reasons why I pick the USS Massachusetts Battleship as my favorite trip. That I took with Pack 230. I hope that some day you will be able to go if you have not gone yet.

My Trip to Fire Island

In scouting my favorite time was when I was a Bear or a Wolf going to walk the fire island light house. It was over 200 steps TaLL and when I got there we walked the board walk to the light house. It took about 30 minutes and I walked with my dad.  When I got there It was over 100 feet from the ground it was scary but when I got down I felt happy and brave-that's my story on walking up the Fire Island light house. It was fun and a little scary.

 Cub Parent Weekend

Cub Parent Weekend 2009 was fun.  First, we made our tents than we unpacked our stuff.  There were many activities.  There was Archery, Fishing, Swimming, Arts and Crafts, Science learning, and Water Sports.  We also played games at the campsite.  We played Frisbee, Man Hunt, Tag, Card Games, and Spy.  There was food at the Main Hall like chicken for dinner, hotdogs for lunch, and pancakes for breakfast.  At the last 2 days there was a hunt for the rocks with elements on them.  There was Fire, Water, Earth, and Air.  We found Fire and Water.  My favorite part is when we roasted marshmallows.  They tasted good.  Cub Parent Weekend was fun and I will look forward to it next year.

My favorite part of Cub Scouts is camping at Schiff.  I camped two years for Webelos Woods and 2 years for cub/parent weekend.  Even though it rained every time we went, we still had fun.  I had never slept in a tent before and traveling in the dark, in the middle of the night to use the bathroom were new experiences for me.  I learned how to shoot a bow and arrow and finally hit the target this past summer at cub/parent weekend.  We fished on this huge lake, everyone was catching fish like crazy, than swam in it later that day.  We played with water and buckets, getting wet on a hot day is always fun.  We carved soap into cool objects and played racing games.  I have to say that the most fun was the obstacle course.  I like racing against my mom and winning.  We cooked our food by throwing it into the fire.  We took hamburger and put a whole bunch of stuff on it and wrapped it in aluminum foil, then threw it in the fire and waited for it to cook.  Then at night we all met at the stone circle, which is this circular wall made of stone and all the other packs come too.  We sit around and put on skits and watch the bonfire.  When we get back to camp we roast marshmallows and make s'mores.  At night we went into our tents to sleep.  All you can hear is the wind or fire crackling.  It is fun to sleep outside.  Camping is always an experience, especially with Pack 230.

My favorite cub scout activity was at Webelos Woods last year.  I made my own hamburger, put it in aluminum foil and cooked it on the fire.  I never even tasted a hamburger before and my Dad forced me to try it!  I was so hungry that I ate the whole thing.  Now I love hamburgers all because of cub scouts!!

Hershey Park

The think I liked most about cub scouting is when I was a Wolf Cub. We went camping in Hershey Park. It was so much fun to rid on many of the roller coasters especially the Wild Cat and the Comet. I went to a few rides in the night and a lot of rides in the morning. It was really the best time of scouting

My Favorite Scout Activity
My favorite den activity is Pinewood Derby. I like this activity because last year I came in third and this year I came in fifth.
It is so much fun because I like drawing my designs and carving my car with my Dad. I love to pick the decorations and the color of the paint. It is also fun to see what other kids have made.
As you can see from what I have written, I really like the Pinewood Derby.

Will's Article

Our Cub Scout Pack 230 had a Pinewood Derby.  First we had to register our cars.  The way they register is by weight and height and length.  There was a little work shop on the side to fix the cars that weren’t exactly right.  I had to go there because my car was too longs.  Then after I fixed my car I got registered.  We sat in the gym until the races start.  The tigers went first.  Something happened with the speaker it made a very loud squeak.  The race was long because they had to do a test run.  Then it was the wolves turn. This race was much shorter.  A lot of the cars have different designs.  The bears were up next.  They had weird designs on their cars.  Finally it was the Webelos turn.  My car was a rainbow colored car.  My friend David’s car was a railroad track.  I didn’t come in 1st 2nd or 3rd but I still got a pretty cool trophy. In the end we all took a picture with all our cars and trophy’s.  In the end we all had a good time.

David's Article

I liked the time when we all saw the movie “Down and Derby”. It was lots of fun.  The movie is very funny.  I liked that the pack sold snacks like popcorn and water to watch the movie.  I sat by my best friend.  I was able to bring my sleeping bag and a pillow to sit on and if I wanted to I could lay down on them.

My Hike to Janes Hill.

This was my first attempt at hiking. We went to Jane’s Hill -- A whopping 401 feet above sea level.  We had a good time.  A lot of people went.  We gathered on the roadside in Melville.  The trail was leafy, bumpy and LONG.  There were horse stables and a park.  We got to eat, sit and rest.  Then it was back on the trail.  It was harder to get going after our short break and the last mile was the longest.  We were so excited to see the opening and the road.  We were exhausted.  I slept good that night and so did my mother.

Jason’s Article

This year we made a catapult. We took a container of

orange juice and cut it up. We made holes on the side
and put a pencil through it. We attached a spoon to
the pencil and connected the spoon to a rubber band
and the rubber band to a thumbtack in the bottom of
the container. We put a marshmallow on the spoon and
held the spoon down by pulling it back. We let it go
and the marshmallow went flying.

I took it home and wrapped tissues in tape. I put them
on the spoon and I flung them at my brother, Zachary.
To have lots of fun, I made a goal post out of
cardboard and I flung wrapped tissues through the
goalpost. Making the catapult was so much fun!!

Boy Scouts of America 2010 Celebrate Scouting Stamp

Celebrate Scouting with the Boy Scouts of America and the United States Postal Service!

In 2010, the year of our 100th Anniversary, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) will receive an incredible honor from the United States Postal Service (USPS) in the form of a “Celebrate Scouting” stamp. A tribute to the impact of a century of Scouting on the American landscape, the stamp will become widely available during the summer of 2010.

Since 1910, Scouting has served young people and their families through a program of values-based leadership and character. Continuing the BSA’s long tradition of service and good turns, we will bring deeper purpose to the Celebrate Scouting stamp by sending letters and care packages to the military men and women serving our country overseas. Also included in this effort are the many veterans who have honorably served our country throughout the years. Join us in the effort!
